The Power of Morning Routines

Have you ever started the morning in such a way that it feels as if you have set the day up to be a good one?

When you start the morning in a way that resonates with you, and it is in line with your values, it sets the tone for the entire day. When you do this consistently, it sets the tone for the entire week and month.

There are many possible benefits of a morning routine, but it depends on which benefits you want to reap. What are your goals and values? How can you make a routine that speaks to those values? We will cover all of this, and dive into some famous examples of morning routines of highly successful people. First, here is a basic list of the benefits of morning routines. Productivity: Newton’s first law of motion sums this up perfectly: “An object in motion wants to stay in motion.” It is far too easy to be sedentary for the rest of the day if you start the day that way. Getting active, pursuing your desires, or even tackling the hardest task of the day first, can lead to a far more productive day. We also tend to have more willpower, energy, and focus in the morning before the day has run us down. Ease of mind: When you have already accomplished something before the day has truly begun, it is much more difficult to be hard on yourself about a lack of productivity throughout the day. Knock something out first thing, and you are limiting the ways in which your mood can sour through the day. Confidence: When you can look back at your week and realize how much you accomplished just within the first 15 minutes of each day, it is tough to not have an increased sense of self-image and confidence. Even if you are not able to control anything else in your day, the morning belongs to you. Treat-yo-self: Most can probably attest to the fact that as the day progresses, and we get deeper into our “to-do” lists, it gets harder to stop and take care of yourself. Make yourself a promise that you will Treat-yo-self before anything else in the day happens. This ensures that you are putting your needs first. This not only ensures that you are taking care of your mind and body, but also that you are increasing your sense of self-worth.

Routine Examples

If you are not quite convinced that a morning routine can help you find success or productivity, There are many examples of successful people who have morning routines and stick to them like a religion. Again, success means something different to everyone so you will likely notice that each person has a much different view on what that routine should look like. John Paul DeJoria “DeJoria, the cofounder of Patrón tequila and Paul Mitchell hair products, starts every morning with five minutes of quiet reflection.” “Doesn’t matter where I’m at, which home I’m in, or what hotel room I’m visiting," he says. "The very second I wake up, I stay in bed for about five minutes and just be." During those five minutes, he tries to be truly "present," and is grateful for what he has.”

Gary Vaynerchuk The co-founder and CEO of VaynerMedia plans his mornings down to the minute. “First thing, he catches up on the news: ESPN, Business Insider, and a news aggregator called Nuzzel. Next, he communicates with his massive Twitter following: "I search my handle and try to find anything I might have missed from the night before, or even that morning, considering my European and Asian bases. I respond to as many people as possible." “The most unique aspect of his morning routine, however, occurs in the car on the way to the office: He calls his mother, father, or sister, depending on who he spoke with last.” "I catch up with them. Talk to them. Just learn what they’re up to," he says. "I really value those small moments."

Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor and one of the great Stoic philosophers. He had a very specific way of starting the day that involved a discussion with himself. He would ask himself questions that eventually concluded with the realization that he needed to get out of bed and get into action. How Can I Start My Own Routine?

Let’s get you started on your own routine. To start off, here are 5 easy guidelines for getting started. These tips will help to increase your chances of success in building this exciting new habit.

Step One: The five main aspects of starting a routine for yourself are:

  1. Keep it simple to start. The more simple it is, the easier it will be to adopt.

  2. Keep it focused - Try not to bog down your routine with 100 different things to do.

  3. It should include both movement, AND stillness ( This article by Verywell explains why this is important.)

  4. Go easy on yourself - You will have setbacks, that is ok! Everyone has off days!

  5. Tailor it to YOU. - Feel free to borrow aspects, but do not adopt someone else's exact routine. You should design yours to fit you specifically.

Step Two: Next, you will want to figure out what type of activities you should Examples of routine activities:

  • Gratitude

  • Stillness, Quiet, Meditation, or being present in any way

  • Movement - Yoga, walking, stretching, Working out

  • Approach your hardest task first

  • Make your bed

  • Gather your thoughts, and strategize your day out

  • Wake up early

  • Make your bed

  • Spend time with a loved one

Step Three: Lastly, pick a method for holding yourself accountable, and remembering your routine each day.

  • Post it in a place you will see it every day

  • Set it as your screensaver or background

  • Schedule it in google calendars (You can have reminders sent to you)

  • Write it in a task-app so you can check it off as you go throughout your day

The last suggestion is simply to take it easy on yourself and have patience with this practice. Habits typically take 6 weeks to start reaping the deeper benefits. You are also human! If you skip a day or something comes up, don’t beat yourself up over it. It is long term consistency that will truly pay dividends. What kind of routine do you have?
